As of mid-May 2020, we have suspended our search for more Naturalists. Check back at a later date in case our needs change.
Want to Join the Barrier Island Education Team?
St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center seeks Christian Teachers/Naturalists each school year to work with the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program. St. Christopher, a ministry of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina, is located 25 miles south of Charleston on Seabrook Island.
The campus includes nearly one mile of beach, 100 acres of salt marsh, 200 acres of undisturbed maritime forest, two freshwater ponds, and a freshwater swamp. The year will provide an opportunity to not only gain valuable environmental education experience but to learn how to be a minister through all walks of life.
Season runs from August to May. We are hiring for the season that begins in the Autumn of 2020.
Teach and lead day and evening classes on beach, dune, salt marsh, and maritime forest ecosystems. Other topics of study include herpetology, sharks, marine mammals, birding, orienteering, and team-building. Assist with animal care in our herpetarium and aquarium, trail maintenance, curriculum development, and other activities and campus upkeep as assigned. Serve with Housekeeping staff one morning or afternoon each week to help maintain the center. Time off is provided each week. There may be additional opportunities for weekend work with other programs and guests, for additional pay. Weekly attendance to the staff bible study and staff chapel is required. Beachside staff lodging, free Wi-Fi, and meals are provided.
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent further education or experience is required. A focus in education, biology or environmental science is preferred but not necessary. Teaching interest and ability with elementary and middle school students and a strong committed love of God are of utmost importance.
