         First of all, what is Camp Saint Christopher? We are an Episcopal Summer Camp located on beautiful Seabrook Island, South Carolina. With 314 acres of barrier island property, there’s always an adventure to be had! Perhaps you’ll sail or swim on the beach or launch a kayak into the marsh. Maybe you’ll lead a hike on one of our trails (we have 5 miles to choose from!) or have a bonfire under the stars. And at the end of the day, you can watch the sunset from the boardwalk or from one of our beachfront cabins with all your new camping friends. It’s going to be an epic summer! Join us!

Accountability: The Director of Summer Camp oversees all summer team roles. Additionally, they may receive oversight from the Executive Director of St. Christopher and the Bishop of The Episcopal Church in South Carolina.

Requirements for Counselors and Counselors-in-Training (CITs)

  • First Aid, CPR & AED Certified (Adults & Infants) We strongly suggest this be completed before arriving to camp, but we can offer this during training and/or provide reimbursement for this training. Please keep all records and receipts for reimbursements.
  • Completion of Safeguarding God’s Children, a sexual abuse prevention training
  • Counselors must arrive to camp and attend training on May 24th
    • (You would be moving in at this point and living here for the summer)
  • Counselors-in-Training must attend a minimum of one overnight training (listed below)
  • We need most of our counselors and CITs to be Lifeguards. Those interested in becoming a lifeguard will need to schedule and complete this before arriving to camp. We will reimburse you for this training, but it will not be offered during training in 2024.
  • Those team members who are not comfortable becoming a lifeguard have the opportunity to choose other certifications and trainings provided by and/or paid by the camp. (Examples: Archery Instructor, Rock Wall Belayer, Kayak Trip Leader etc.)

2024 Training Dates

Counselors-in-Training (CITs)

CITs must attend a minimum of one overnight training session in the spring of 2024 to serve as a CIT at Camp Saint Christopher. If you are unable to attend any of these weekends, you must discuss this with the Director or Summer Camp during your interview to still be considered. (Revised 1/9/24)

The January, February, and March training dates have been cancelled to accommodate student’s academic, extracurricular, and athletic team commitments.

New training weekend for CIT Training  has been scheduled for the following dates.

May 10th, 11th, 12th

Arrive at 5:00 pm on May 10th

Depart at 9:00 am on May 12th

If CITS are unable to attend in-person, a virtual Zoom Option will be provided.

Counselors

Counselors may arrive at campus for the summer on May 24th beginning at 2:00 pm. This is the first day of training, so all the team is required to be in attendance. Exceptions will only be made with early and frequent communication with the Director of Summer Camp. Completing high school and graduation would be considered. Vacations would not be an acceptable or an approved excused absence for training.

Arrive to campus for the summer and move into cabins beginning at 2:00 pm

All team members will live in cabins during training. Once training is complete, roommates and room assignments in the staff house will be given. This allows for all cleaning and maintenance related projects to be completed before the team moves in.

Positions Available

Collective Support Staff Responsibilities:

  1. Lead, train, assist, help, support, and mentor camp counselors while in your program area
  2. Create a healthy Christian camp culture among campers and staff
  3. Serve as other important roles: Lifeguard, Rock Climbing Wall, Archery Instructor, Driver, etc.
  4. Support night programs
  5. Support all camp staff in the upholding the community covenant, with grace and love
  6. Work at least one weekend as a stay over session counselor

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Support total management, safety, and logistics of all programmatic aspects of Camp Saint Christopher
  2. Support lead coordinators in running their programs
  3. Ensure that team members are prepared to lead activities with campers
  4. Plan, coordinate, and implement evening programs, free choices, and whole-camp
  5. Think creatively about leading the nightly program and about how to get campers excited about it throughout the day
  6. Create hype and buildup surrounding each upcoming activity (free choices, special skills, evening programs, whole- camp activities) through engaging announcements throughout the day/session
  7. Coordinate set up and tear down of evening program while maintaining care of gear and supplies
  8. Empower and spread responsibility to other team members to help lead evening programs
  9. Effectively communicate evening program needs to other staff members
  10. Work team to coordinate any needs that may arise through the camp sessions

Additional Expectations: Be prepared to implement any additional work responsibilities that may be asked of you.

Desired Specific Qualifications: At least 18 years of age on or before June 1st, 2024, graduated from HS, have a proven willingness to work with young people.

Additional Area Leadership Opportunities for Counselors:

In addition to the counselor job description expectations, leaders may be called to serve in various area leadership roles that support the overall success of the entire team. Additional compensation will be provided for these roles. Returning staff are considered first for these roles, but all counselors can express interest in these areas during their interview. Ultimately the Director of Summer Camp and Assistant Summer Camp Director will have the final say in what roles our team will serve in and counselors will have the option to accept that position.

Boating Coordinators

  • Two counselors will be serving as our boating area leaders. One team member will oversee sailing, and the other staff member will oversee kayaking. These two will work alongside each other to oversee all things related to boating and waterfront safety, including but not limited to maintenance, supplies, and certifications. Additional training and certifications will be required for these positions that must be completed prior to summer camp. For the right candidates, financial support will be provided to complete these requirements.

Waterfront Coordinators

  • Two counselors will serve alongside each other and act as the head lifeguards. Waterfront activities such as swim tests and swimming require at least one of these area leaders to be present. These area leaders oversee all the preparation (swim tests, buddy chips, swim line, weather, and conditions etc.) around waterfront activities.

Faith Formation Coordinators

  • Two counselors will serve alongside each other to create, uphold, and prepare for all worship and music within our camp programming. Ideally one person will oversee the slideshows and planning with the Summer Camp Chaplains, and the other counselor will oversee all music preparation, practices, and equipment. Creativity, experience with participating in and leading worship, and strong communications skills are a must.

Creative Arts Coordinators

  • Two counselors will serve alongside each other to support the free choice and special skills programming. This will include the preparation of arts and crafts, theater, and any other additional activities where the chaplain may need support. Strong communication and organizational skills are a must, and interest and experience in the arts is strongly preferred.

Sports Coordinators

  • Two counselors will serve alongside each other to support and lead the free choice, special skills programming, and any evening sports related activities, in addition to our climbing wall and archery range. Strong communication and organizational skills are a must, and interest and experience in sports OR rock climbing OR archery is preferred. Additional training and certifications related to archery and the climbing wall will be required. For the right candidates, financial support will be provided to complete these requirements.

CIT Coordinator

  • This individual will be organized and will work efficiently to oversee our Counselors-in-Training program and will be the point of contact for the CITs when they have questions about preparing, packing, and getting to Camp Saint Christopher.

Hospitality Coordinator

  • This individual will work as the liaison between the summer team and Food Services, Maintenance and Guest Services departments on campus. This includes connecting with the camp directors and department directors to ensure good communication and planning for meals, housekeeping and maintenance needs of buildings and campus.

Desired Specific Qualifications: At least 16 years old on or before June 1st, 2024, willing to volunteer two of more weeklong camp sessions, proven desire to be a servant leader. This role is intended for leadership development and is currently unpaid. We will invest in all of our CIT’s by providing and paying for their professional development opportunities such as First Aid, CPR & AED Training (Adult and Infant), and another other certifications such as learning to belay on the rock wall, and lead archery etc.

Accountability: The Communications Intern reports directly to the Director of Summer Camp. Additionally, they may receive oversight from the Executive Director of St. Christopher and the Bishop of The Episcopal Church in South Carolina.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Passion and ability to work well with children, youth, and emerging adults
  • Comfortable with building Christian community through teaching, leading, and equipping others
  • Passion and ability to facilitate harmonious relationships and interactions between staff and campers
  • Ability to perform potentially strenuous physical activities (hiking, campouts, swimming, )
  • Ability to give and receive feedback to contribute to personal and professional growth and the betterment of the community

  3. Serve as other important roles as needed (Staying in cabin, Challenge Course Facilitator; Lifeguard; Driver; )
  4. Support evening programs
  5. Support all camp staff
  6. Support all camp staff in upholding the community covenant, with grace and love
  7. Work at least one weekend as a stay over session counselor

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Communications Intern will tell the story of campers’ experience through several different outlets including Facebook and Instagram
  2. Take photos and videos of camp activities
  3. Organize and store the best pictures and videos throughout the summer on a hard drive
  4. Ensure footage is taken of all camp activities
  5. Make several media posts each day that camp is in Some of these should be video and some photo. All video posts are to be approved by the camp director before they are posted to social media.
  6. Make slideshow video with music of each session to be shared with the entire camp on closing day
  7. Maintain, care for, and be responsible for all technology
  8. Take cabin pictures of the cabin every opening day of each session
  9. Take staff pictures and make name tags during staff training
  10. Create a staff video throughout the summer to be shown at end of summer staff banquet

Additional Expectations: See a need, fill a need. Be prepared to implement any additional work responsibilities that may be asked of you.

Desired Specific Qualifications: At least 18 years old; photography experience; videography experience, editing software experience, ideally willing to serve for several weeks at a time. This is a paid position and compensation will be provided based on experience and time committed to the summer season and will vary from the above pay worksheet and base pay.

Accountability: The Summer Camp Chaplain(s) reports directly to reports directly to the Director of Summer Camp and Assistant Director of Summer Camp. Additionally, they may receive oversight from the Executive Director of St. Christopher and the Bishop of The Episcopal Church in South Carolina.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Passion and ability to work well with children, youth, and emerging adults
  • Comfortable with building Christian community through teaching, leading, and equipping others
  • Passion and ability to facilitate harmonious relationships and interactions between staff and campers
  • Ability to perform potentially strenuous physical activities (hiking, campouts, swimming, )
  • Ability to give and receive feedback to contribute to personal and professional growth and the betterment of the community

  • Note: Ordination in the Episcopal tradition is helpful, but not required. Lay formation professionals and seminarians are encouraged to apply!

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Take a primary role in building covenant-based community among staff, (serve as teacher & mentor to staff)
  2. Work in tandem with the Faith Formation Coordinators
  3. Lead morning worship and end the day with compline
  4. With visiting priests, organize Sunday evening Eucharist
  5. Organize skits, equipment, & music for daily worship and faith formation
  6. Ensure that counselors are prepared to lead and participate in worship
  7. Implement a restful faith formation experience for staff
  8. Ensure the beliefs and practices of the Episcopal Church are implemented
  9. Consult as needed with campers and staff who want to explore their
  10. Provide pastoral care for staff and campers who need extra support (fitting in to camp, homesickness, )
  11. Compile suggestions for improving the spiritual components of camp

Additional Expectations: Be prepared to implement any additional work responsibilities that may be asked of you.

Desired Specific Qualifications: At least 21 years of age, active spiritual life, knowledge of the beliefs & practices of the Episcopal Church

Accountability: The Summer Camp Nurse reports directly to reports directly to the Director of Summer Camp and Assistant Director of Summer Camp. Additionally, they may receive oversight from the Executive Director of St. Christopher and the Bishop of The Episcopal Church in South Carolina.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Passion and ability to work well with children, youth, and emerging adults
  • Comfortable with building Christian community through teaching, leading, and equipping others
  • Passion and ability to facilitate harmonious relationships and interactions between staff and campers

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Provide the health care, (health screening, medical treatment and emergency treatment as stated in the medical standing orders), for all campers and members of staff and will work within the guidelines set down by their professional body regarding accountability and confidentiality.
  2. For the purposes of this job description health care includes first aid, emergency treatment, dispensing of medications, administration of prescribed medical treatment, as stated in the Camp Health Care Plan, and the standing medical orders (ACA standard Health & Wellness).  The policies at camp have been set up in accordance with guidelines set down by the ACA, (American Camp Association), OSHA, (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), and ADA, (Americans with Disabilities Act).
  3. A commitment to summer staff training requirements and the summer schedule is required. Room and board are provided during the camp sessions.

Desired Specific Qualifications:

  • Be at least 21 years of age, complete online Safeguarding God’s Children Sexual Abuse Training, and Possess valid credentials around emergency care from a nationally recognized certifying body. (First Aid/CPR/AED for the professional rescuer)
  • The minimum preferred at Camp Saint Christopher is certification as an EMT, PM, LPN, or RN. MD applicants are also accepted. We also ask that our camp nurse complete or present a current Medication Administration Training Certificate.
