For our first blog post in this series of blog posts we are going to introduce you all to our Program Assistant and Senior Naturalist.

Hello my name is Andrew Bailey and I am the Program Assistant of Barrier Island. I hail from the great state of Georgia. I grew up in the small town of Rockmart. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Shorter University.IMG_0850I also have an Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Georgia Northwestern Technical College. I have spent the last five years working with outreach and education programs across the country. I love working at Barrier Island! It has been a huge blessing to be part of such an awesome environmental education program.  At Barrier Island I get to bring my two passions, teaching and the natural world, together in an attempt to instill a love for environmental conservation within the hearts and minds of the students that we teach. In my free time I enjoy exploring new places, kayaking, hiking, reading, and spending time with friends. A quote that has defined my life is from C.S. Lewis and goes like this, “The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing — to reach the Mountain, to find the place where all the beauty came from — my country, the place where I ought to have been born. Do you think it all meant nothing, all the longing? The longing for home? For indeed it now feels not like going, but like going back.”

Hey my name is Michelle Boerigter and I am the Senior Naturalist here at Barrier Island. page1image8616.jpgI am from Los Alamos, New Mexico. I graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. I am excited about working at Barrier Island because I love helping people see the marvelous things right outside their door step!  In my free time I enjoy sleeping in sun, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, watching movies, and playing board games.  A favorite quote of mine is from Mary Poppins,“In every job there must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and SNAP! The job’s a game!”
